Grooming Hints
The care you expect, the love they deserve!
A million questions about grooming? Hopefully some of the information
on this page will help! If you have any questions not covered on this
page feel free to call and speak to one of our grooming specialist or
email us at allaboutpets@bellsouth.net
~ How often should I have my pet groomed?
Good Grooming leads to good health in your loved one.
Usually that question depends on the type of coat and
clip you want your loved one in . Longer coats usually
require more attention! But, the average groom time for
most of our guest usually is every six to eight weeks. We
find by then nails are ready to be clipped, Ears are ready
to be cleaned and anal glands are ready to be
expressed. With longer coats homework is still required
on your part, such as combing (not just brushing) your pet
out. Cats, our general rule of thumb is once a season!
~ Is it advisable to clip my breed of animal down for the summer.
There has been a big debate in the industry for a long time. With Show animals, clip downs are a no-no.
Hair that grows back can be duller in sheen. For the average every day pet owner the question is a lot
more complicated. The belief has always been that large full coated dogs use their coat to keep cool in the
summer. But, each year we have hundreds of animal owners that request shave downs. The number of
Labrador Retrievers alone is amazing. Most people do not have the time or money to take care of the
coats and do not want to mess with the hair in the home. It has been our experience through the years that
this has little or no effect on the animal. Things to be aware of if you do clip down are ; animals with health
problems such as thyroid problems should avoid a clip down. Coat may not grow back or may grow back
spotty. Be ware of sunburn during the summer. Do not let your pet lay in the sun after a clip down. Usually
this rule of thumb is only for the first week or so after a clip. Allow your pets skin to become used to the sun
as you would your own. Finally understand that matting determines the length of a pet in many instances. If
you allow your pet to become to matted there is no humane way to get rid of those matts other than clipping
down and starting all over. We will not torture a dog here and please do not ask us too.

~ What age should I begin grooming or boarding
Rule of thumb as soon as they have received the last of their shots. Many
dogs and cats for that matter require grooming or boarding their entire life.
Many people make the mistake of waiting for the last minute and this can be
very traumatic for the animal at older ages. Start them young by scheduling a
day at the spa. This will get your loved one used to being in a different
environment and will get you used to leaving your pet. It is important to get
your dog or cat used to bathing, drying, clippers and combs. Many of these
things will be a part of their entire life. Also on the boarding side getting used
to be around other animals beside those in the household.
~How long will my pet be there.
Pet grooming is a time consuming art. With each animal it is always different due to condition of coat, type
of clip, animals temperament and honestly the bathing and drying time of the animals coming in the building
that day. We stagger our appointments in through out the day in order to prevent someone from being here
to long, But, I always tell my customers that we work with sharp instruments and we ask that patience be a
virtue in this case. One difficult dog or cat or one animal in bad condition can put us behind real easy. We
always try to call you as soon as we are done but, it honestly is depending on the day. If you do have time
restraints please notify the Reservation specialist at time of check-in. We try to work with each individual
based on time needs. Some of our customers drop off for the day and go to work while others live far away
in the surrounding counties and even states. If time is a real concern, consider scheduling a straight-thru
Groom with one of our Grooming Specialist. We designate one groomer with fewer animals that day and
charge a little extra in order to compensate the groomer. Average groom time on a straight-thru groom is
usually 2 - 2 1/2 hours.

~Is there any kind of grooming that you do not do there.
Hand stripping.
~What kind of shampoo do you use on my pet.
We use a variety of shampoo's based on coat and condition of the skin. Our
average everyday shampoo is usually Oatmeal based which we find to be
more soothing for the skin and less harsh on many of our guest. With each
of our pets who enter the building we hand wash them twice in order to get a
nice clean coat and hand dry to remove any dead coat and give the that nice
look!
~Can I pre-book my appointments.
Yes! Just make a list of dates that work for you and we can book you through-out the year. Pre-booking a
appointment guarantees you a spot on the day you need and helps you to keep on a regular grooming
program for you pet.
~Cuts or nicks
When working with animals cuts and nicks are always a possibility. Not all animals stand still on the table
and sometimes they zig when we zag. Cuts and nicks are rare and can be as traumatic for the groomer as it
is for you. Our policy here is to let you know about any injury that may happen so that it can be properly
tended too. Hiding a injury is not only stupid, it could take a very minor problem and lead to a serious one
real quick. We do work with a mobile veterinarian if there is a problem and most of the local veterinarian
clinics. If there is a problem we will notify you immediately by phone if possible. We groom thousands of
dogs every year and honestly never have a problem. But, like everything in life it is always a possibility.

Fleas or other parasitic infections -- If we see a flea infestation of any kind or any
other kind of parasitic infection we will treat your animal immediately to prevent a
problem in the building. Any extra charges will be applied to your bill and needless to
say we will try to contact you by phone so that you may take steps while your pet is away
to try to treat the problem in the home if necessary. We highly recommend that your pet
be on some form of Flea control to prevent any problems. Please remember that any
animal that is found to have a flea infestation could have other problems such as tape worms. Please keep
a close on stools or have you loved one checked by your veterinarian. Make sure when treating your
home to use something that is specifically designed for fleas and flea eggs. Flea eggs can lay dormant in
your home for a very long time. Make sure to wash your pets bedding and sanitize you bagless vacuum
cleaner or throw away the bag if you have a vacuum that uses one.
~Pre-existing medical problems
My loved one has allergies, My loved one has diabetes, my loved one has had a broken leg, my loved one
has had a bad back. These are just a few of the things that we have seen or dealt with in the past.
Generally we work with all of our guest for any medical issues they may have. We are very experienced in
this area. But, it is important that you always keep us up to date with any problems that arise with your pet
over the years of grooming. We keep careful records on all of our guest so that we can work around any
issues that any pet in the building may have or arise.
~ Other things you should know.
We pride ourselves on saving lives and keeping our dogs healthy. If we see a medical problem we try to
make sure we point them out so they may be attended to. Tumors or fatty growths, ear infections or
parasitic infections, Frequent urination or fowl smell in urine are just a few of the things that we have
pointed out to owners in the past that lead to life saving treatments in some instants.
Our Groomers are all very experienced and have all been in the industry for a while. Any new groomer we
bring into the fold must go through an intense training program and evaluation before we allow them to
groom on their own. We groom in an open air atmosphere so that you may see the animals on the table.
We make it our goal to chose staff members that are avid animal lovers and who love and enjoy being with
pets. No abuse by any staff member will ever be tolerated! We pride ourselves on our reputation and will
plan to keep it that way!
Please be very specific when asking for the type of clip you want. We keep detailed records of all our hair
cuts and baths here so we may adjust if necessary. When you go to the hair salon it is very easy to say a
little off here or more off there. But, your pet cannot tell us. We will strive hard to meet any clip needs. If
you do not like the length of the face or length of the body let us know and we will notate any changes you
request. Our goal is to get to a clip that you like. If something is to long we can always adjust it at the
moment if a groomer is still available. If something is to short, remember that it is hair and it will grow
back. Many times faster than you like.
